This is the kind of new release experience commentary that is probably going to be helpful for lots of people, even long after the initial release. Thank you!

I have a Creative card in my main PC, so I’m going to bookmark this post. If the problem is due to a high latency kernel, it makes me wonder what the real-time kernel or perhaps Ubuntu Studio would be like. I’ve not tried either of those.

If you want to hear some echoes from the past; I’ve got Banshee using 15% CPU and PulseAudio using 7% CPU on this Mobile Pentium 3 600 MHz, running Ubuntu Hardy. (^^)

If the problem is kernel latency, maybe you should try the low-latency kernel? That’s the one with the -rt designation. Though PulseAudio is a bit of a train wreck
