This worked great for me. Running Ubuntu 12.04. I installed a borrowed copy of Win 7 upgrade on my virtual machine. Purchased an upgrade copy of Windows (cheap academic version) for me. From within borrowed copy of Win 7 (not activated), I created a shared folder, brought in the iso.exe file that came with my Windows purchase, extracted that within Windows, put it back in the shared folder so I could place that in the virtual CD drive. Then I fired up the borrowed Win 7 in Virtualbox and mounted my Win 7 upgrade virtually. Activated it without a hitch. Thanks for this valuable tip!

Great tip! I was trying to do this by rebooting and installing from the physical DVD drive. Read your article, used Brasero to rip the Win7 disc to iso. Switched the device in XP, hit restart, and presto!
Thanks!
